Oh...What A Week

This past week may go on record as being one of the worst ever for me. Lucky for you that I recorded it all so that I can share it with you:

Monday June 21
Leah began exhibitng some cold symptoms as well as a low-grade fever. We suspected that she may have been cutting some molars.

Tuesday June 22
The fever was much higher today. She was coughing a horible sounding croupy cough. Motrin seemed to help.

Wednesday June 23
After a relatively sleepless night thanks to fever/cough/ear issues we brought Leah in to her pediatrician who diagnosed an ear infection (no big surprise) in her right ear. The left ear looked slightly red but not too bad. Her throat was also nasty looking so he suspected strept which would be covered by the antibiotics for the ear infection so he didn't see the need to put her through a throat swab.

Thursday June 24
Despite the magic medicine, Leah was no better today, in fact, she was worse. She did not get off the couch all day and slept on and off all day. By late evening her fever was up to 105* and was moaning and whining. I asked her where she hurt and she said "everyfing. I all hurt." Also at this point I noticed her struggling to breathe but I thought that was from distress over feeling so poorly. We finally decided that John would take her to the ER while I stayed home with Logan. About an hour later I got a call from John that Leah was going to be admitted to the hospital so I grabbed Logan and joined them in ER. At this point Leah had been diagnosed with pnuemonia(sp?), bi-lateral ear infections, and a throat infection - poor baby. They were trying to admnister a breathing treatment as well as oxygen via a nasal canula and she was having none of it!! She was uncharacteristically freaking out. They had been trying to get an IV started for some time with no success because she was flailing her arms, arching her back, and screaming so hard.... yes, little tiny Leah was drawing quite the crowd of people in her room. Finally, and thankfully, it was decided to give her a dose of ativan and within minutes, she was in la-la land and they were able to complete the procedures and get us to a room. Unbelievably, Logan slept through all of this.

To complete this horror story, Leah spent the next four days in the hospital. They would not discharge her until she could go longer than four hours without a breathing treatment and would eat and drink on her own. We came home with a nebulizer and are still doing two breathing treatments a day - three if necessary.

So, Leah is on the mend... and we have switched her starting date for church school to first week of August instead of next week to give her immune system time to recover.
